The Circuit Court of Giles County is the trial court with the broadest powers in the county. The circuit court handles all civil cases with claims of more than $15,000.

The Circuit Court of Giles County is the trial court with the broadest powers in the county. The circuit court handles all civil cases with claims of more than $15,000. It shares authority with the general district court to hear matters involving between $4,500 and $15,000. The circuit court has the authority to hear serious criminal cases called felonies.

  • The circuit court also handles family matters, including divorce. In addition, the circuit court hears cases appealed from the general district court and from the juvenile and domestic relations district court.
  • The circuit court also issues marriage licenses, fishing and hunting permits, and maintains all deeds.
  • Circuit court judges are elected by the General Assembly for 8-year terms.

  • Terms of court begin on the 2nd Tuesday in January, April, July, & October of each year
  • Grand Juries convene the 1st day of each Term.
  • Cases to be heard are set on docket calls or by agreement of counsel with consent of court.
  • Docket calls are scheduled 10:00 a.m. on opening day of Term.
  • Court convenes 9:00 a.m.
  • Commissioners in Chancery are utilized in selection of jury, partition suits, and other major contested chancery causes.
